Survive and Thrive at Your Next Concert!

If you’re a regular concert-goer, you’ll know it’s basically like the Hunger Games, trying to secure a ticket to your favourite artist’s show.

The preparation starts way before the actual day – from deciding which seats to aim for, to picking the perfect concert outfit. However, in all that excitement, one thing often gets slept on – concert etiquette.

I’ve been to a total of six shows over the past three years. Some became the most memorable nights of my life while others were… questionable.

For instance, when I was at the Niall Horan concert in May last year, a girl in front of me held up a massive banner that completely blocked my view. As if that wasn’t bad enough, she waved a doll over her head the entire time, making it almost impossible for the people behind to enjoy the show.

So here’s a handy list of do’s and don’ts I wish everyone follows, so you (and everyone else) can have fun, and have the best concerts of your lives!

Do’s

Plan your seat section in advance

Don’t panic-buy! Check the seat map ahead and list down your top picks. Do you want to sing and dance your heart out? Or are you just there for the music?

Some sections have restricted views, while others may not be sheltered. Take these factors into consideration when planning which seats to get.

Download your tickets in advance

Trust me, the signal at the concert venues is really weak. I’d recommend that you save your e-ticket to your Files app or wallet so you’re not the one holding up the line while trying to frantically load the page.

Snag your merchandise early

If you're eyeing official merch, get them before the concert starts! Post-show queues are often ridiculously long after the concert, and items sell out fast.

Know the venue guidelines

Don’t risk getting your camera or power banks confiscated. Each venue has rules about items you can or cannot bring. It’s always better to know ahead so you don't end up having to throw something away at the gate.

Meet your friends before entering

Once you’re inside the venue, finding anyone is nearly impossible. Gather your friends beforehand so you avoid losing one another.

Plan your restroom visits wisely

No one wants to miss their favourite song while being stuck in a toilet queue... Go before the show starts or try to hold it unless it’s urgent.

Don’ts

Don’t block others with oversized banners

We get your love for your idol… But that doesn’t mean others should suffer with a blocked view. If you bring a sign, keep it low and only raise it when the artist asks the crowd to.

Don’t scream over the artist

Yup! Cheering for your favourite artist is great, but yelling over the artist (especially when they’re trying to talk to the audience) is not. Let everyone enjoy the moment as the world does not revolve around you…

Don’t invade personal space

Concert venues are very crowded, but that doesn’t mean personal boundaries do not exist! Avoid pushing and shoving your way to the front, especially in a standing pen.

Don’t record the entire show

Taking a few clips for memories or social media? Sure! However, holding up your phone the entire time will ruin the view for others, and to be very honest, you’ll enjoy it more if you live in the moment.

Don’t drink alcohol, stay hydrated instead

While it’s tempting to party hard and go wild, too much alcohol can ruin your night. Choose to stay hydrated instead, you’ll thank yourself later (and actually remember the concert…)
