Mandopop Star Firdhaus at His First Tour in Singapore

Firdhaus is a rising star in the Mandopop scene, writing many lyrical songs that can resonate well to his audience. He has inspired many fans (including myself) with the stories he has to tell. Ethnically Malay, Firdhaus has wow-ed the internet with the many songs he has written after considering Mandarin as his first language.

Firdhaus performed at the Esplanade Theatre on 13 and 14 June this year. Here are some memorable highlights from the concert.

1. Opening act

Known for his romantically sad songs, Firdhaus opened the act on a sentimental note. The dark backdrop was accompanied with projected lyrics from the songs, further enhancing the mood.

Emotions quickly overtook me as I listened to the heartfelt songs. One of them was If I Die Pls Tell My Mom I Love Her. This heart-wrenching title was written six years ago, when Firdhaus was experiencing hardships.

Before he sang the song, he shared the back story behind it. He had often driven into the vast emptiness alone after work. Those times when he had disturbing thoughts, he would think of his mother who would always wait for him to be home.

It certainly touched the hearts of many people in the audience as I heard sniffling around me. When I read the lyrics on the backdrop, I thought of my mother’s unconditional love and the countless times she has supported me. Like the crowd, tears rolled down my cheeks before I knew it.

“I saw some of you in the first row wiping your tears,” Firdhaus wrapped up the first segment by teasing the audience.

What added to this segment was the change in his outfits on the second night. Firdhaus was dressed in a matte black suit but changed into a sparkly suit half-way through. He definitely looked better in the sparkly outfit.

2. Dior’s magical appearance

Now, who was the mysterious guest at Firdhaus’ concert? It was none other than his girlfriend, Mandopop star Dior, whose appearance got the audience screaming. When she walked on stage in her white dress and her hair in a bun, I screamed at the top of my lungs. She appeared just like a princess.

Dior and Firdhaus surprised us by performing a cover of Ling Yi Ge Tian Tang at the concert.

The love birds also performed their top hit, Divorce in Ghana, together. The tear-jerking title left the whole theatre in awe. Dior wrapped up the segment with her originals Ni Zui Jin Guo De Hao Ma (你最近过得好吗) and Ru Guo Na Tong Dian Hua You Jie Tong (如果那通电话有接通) written for her late mother.

3. Heartfelt sing-alongs

The concert ended with the last segment of Firdhaus performing his most popular hits, WMXGHZYSQN, We’re Only Human, Up & Down. The theatre was filled with echoing voices of the audience singing along. It was an incredibly memorable scene. As such, this concert is my favourite one thus far.

Did everyone enjoy the concert? Well, I was certainly moved by the performances and Firdhaus’ sincerity. His talents are definitely commendable and his efforts put into this tour has paid off.

It felt like a unified experience among the concert-goers, who were all singing praises and still raving about the concert as I left the theatre. I overheard comments such as, “wow, he was really good,” and “I cried so much.”

Firdhaus’ relatable lyrics have gained him many fans from all around the world and I am looking forward to more of his concerts in Singapore, and overseas!
