Make Your Portfolio Pop the American Way

Crashing out over Singapore’s cutthroat education system but still want to prove you’ve got ambition? Why not channel your time and talents into setting up your own organisation?

“Wait, what? Like a company??”. No, much simpler – let me explain.

Like creating a CCA (minus the school regulations), these student-built and -run groups are a hallmark of our American counterparts. Such efforts can be a standout addition to any application, demonstrating strong leadership and drive.
To give us a clearer picture of how to establish and manage such organisations, I spoke to the founder of Golden Student Bears, 11th grader Angelina Te. The initiative is committed to providing resources for educational and career opportunities to Californian students. It does this through Instagram posts and magazine releases – all researched, written and designed by its team of high school journalists and graphic designers.

What inspired you to start Golden Student Bears?

Angelina: Coming from a disadvantaged area, I noticed that there was a significant difference in opportunities between schools in marginalised areas compared to schools in wealthier areas. Knowing this, I created Golden Student Bears to combat the opportunity gap.

What were your first steps in setting it up?

Angelina: The very first step I took was creating an Instagram for Golden Student Bears. After that, I created infographics and collaborated with other people and organisations!

How did you go about finding and bringing in members?

Angelina: I find and recruit members primarily through LinkedIn and Instagram. Personally, I highly recommend using LinkedIn!

What tools do you use to create your content?

Angelina: For my social media content, I use Canva and CapCut. For my magazine, I use Canva, Google Docs and HeyZine.

Any words of wisdom for future founders?

Angelina: My two big pieces of advice for others starting their organisation is to not hire your friends and to not be afraid to make any mistakes!
