Give It Another Tteok
Curiosity got the better of me when I first heard of Bosong Rice Cake’s popularity. I decided to venture down to the second floor of Beauty World Plaza to find out more about the various rice cakes it offers.
Opened in 2018 by a native South Korean ajumma, it gained popularity after it went viral on TikTok. The takeaway store only opens on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, from 11:30am to 7pm or until sold out.
Injeolmi Rice Cake ($5/box)
Starting off, we have Injeolmi Rice Cake, lightly padded with fine soybean powder, it definitely leaves a sweet note to end your palate. It reminded me of the local muah chee, but without the peanut grains!
Mujigae Dduk ($5 for 2)
Next is Mujigae Dduk, this is my personal favourite. Literally known as rainbow rice cake, it consists of five colours—white (plain rice), brown (cinnamon), green (mugwort), pink (berry), and yellow (pumpkin). The texture is so chewy and I was surprised at how light the flavours are. The cinnamon fragrance definitely plays a key role, bringing out the signature of the addictive snack.
Honey Baek Seol Gi ($5 for 2)
I was hesitant to order the Honey Baek Seol Gi as it didn’t look very appealing. Despite it being named after honey, the rice cake does not contain honey at all! Made with brown sugar, the thin layer of filling tastes similar to gula melaka. But if you have a sweet tooth, this might be the rice cake for you.
Ggul Tteok ($5/box)
Let’s not forget the crowd’s favourite, Ggul Tteok! A bite-sized rice cake containing honey and white sesame that leaks out and fills your mouth with a sweet aroma. I did have higher expectations for this, but my classmates that tried it, loved it!
Kkot Tteok ($10 for 3)
Last but not least, we had Kkot Tteok, which are cherry blossom-shaped flowers in pastel shades of yellow and pink. They are so pretty, you almost feel bad eating them. Each petal was filled with smooth fillings in kidney bean, sweet potato, and purple sweet potato flavours. This rice cake is suitable for special occasions but it is on the pricey side, so you might just reconsider getting it.
