Who Are The Harlem Globetrotters?
While you might know more about them through their hilarious games, the Harlem Globetrotters have actually come a long way. With over 20 Guinness World Records, the team was founded in 1927 by Abraham Michael Saperstein, in Chicago, USA.
Their name “Harlem” came from Harlem, New York, a neighbourhood that was considered the centre of African American culture, while “Globetrotters” showcases the team as experienced and world-famous players.
Back when basketball was a mostly white sport, the Harlem Globetrotters made waves as the world’s best basketball team. They introduced to the world how African Americans could play ball professionally, proving this even more when the first African-American player to sign an NBA contract in 1950 was Nathaniel “Sweetwater” Clifton, a Globetrotter.
Now, truly living up to the name, the Harlem Globetrotters are basketball’s pop culture icons, having travelled to more than 120 countries and territories worldwide!
